We've made it to the grand old age of fifty seasons!!

Fifty Summers Long

The 2008 season was the Badgers fiftieth season of existence – I wonder how many of the founders imagined that it would last as long as it has? – and we celebrated this event in style at Tadworth Cricket Club on the 20th July. Even though the actual event has been and gone you might like to check out the fiftieth anniversary page, where you can now find a brief review of the event itself along with links to Rodney Fenner’s photographs and downloadable versions of the ‘These Fifty Years’ booklet, and I may well continue with the fiftieth-themed tidbits as the rest of the season progresses (assuming I can keep thinking of relevant bits of trivia, if that isn’t an oxymoron).

Fiftieth Facts

Pie chart of Badgers centuries by decade

There have been thirty-eight centuries scored over the fifty seasons, with Chris Morgan’s unbeaten 140 against Englefield Green back in 1980 remaining the best of them and Patrick Redding leading the way with seven innings of one hundred or better. In direct contrast to the bowling the batters have obviously Pie chart of Badgers centuries by player been getting the upper hand over recent seasons, a subject that I intend to come back to when I’ve had the chance to analyse the data more fully. The first two decades saw only seven tons, whilst the third decade added another six (five of them courtesy of Chris). The fourth decade added ten more to the total, spread fairly evenly over the years, but in the fifth decade things have gone a little mad, starting with 1999 when four were scored in the one year, and Bill’s knock in the final game of 2008 was the fifteenth century of the last ten years.

A warm and friendly welcome from Badgers Cricket Club – a wandering cricket side who play only friendly cricket matches, mostly in the villages of Surrey – and who also enjoy a yearly three day tour (previously to the Cotswolds, but for the past couple of years to Dorset). For more information about the club and this web site, take a peek at the about page.

The site has continued to grow since it first appeared in March 2000, and in addition to up-to-the-minute news, results, match reports, scorecards and fixtures, you will also find more statistical information than you could shake a stick at, a list of the current club officers, a growing photo gallery and links to general cricket sites and some of the clubs that we play. Believe it or not there is still more historical information to come, and the current focus is on expanding the entries in the hall of fame.

What’s New

2 Nov 2008

Where did October go?? A phone call from Mark a couple of days ago reminded me that the dinner and dance is only a week away, and I need to get my finger out. There may not be another update before the dinner, but Jacqueline and I are two-thirds of the way through checking the scorebook against the database and once that process is complete then I might update the site again with the partial season report.

Full details of the season closing game with Chiltern Gypsies can be found on the results page along with a two-handed match report and the pertinent elements from the scorecard. The match report represents a first for the web site, since I had not registered the fact that Graham Ward had volunteered to write it and had already written a fair chunk of text myself. Rather than waste it, especially as most of my perspective took a different slant, I decided to combine the two, and I hope the end result isn’t too confusing.

I have added what I anticipate to be the final ‘fiftieth fact’ – since I’ve run out of ideas on things to include. The pie charts resulted from a bit of messing about with the Google Chart API (after reading an article in PC Plus magazine last month) and the positioning of the two chart images may vary depending on your browser and screen resolution. If it looks ugly then my apologies but I was trying to get one chart in the top left corner and one in the bottom right corner, with text flowing nicely around them, but I couldn’t get things to work exactly as I intended and ended up with something of a hack. For the bowlers I’ve also brought the previous ‘fiftieth fact’ regarding seven-fers up to date and added similar pie charts.

You should all have received an email from Simon Fox with details of this year’s dinner and dinner, and if you have not then I suggest that you contact Simon directly to make sure that you don’t miss out on the key social date in the Badgers calendar. For those that need a reminder you can find a precis of those details on the news page.

The older What’s New entries are now held on separate pages, to keep this main page cleaner and smaller, and you can also navigate to them using the Javascript menu (under Home).

This site is very much a work in progress and if you have any comments, suggestions or would simply like more information then please feel free to send an email to the webmaster using this link:
